" This is our Life" "Sherry's Story "

" 5/12/1993 - 24/10/2008"

I have had animals all of my life, & my love of them is inherited from my parents, my father owning an Airedale Terrier & my mother [an only child] had many pets. With her beloved Pug "Paddy" she exhibited successfully at Country Shows & Sydney Royal Easter Show winning many awards.

I moved to Avalon on Sydney's Northern Beaches in 1980 from a 2,500 acre mixed farming property, where we also ran Sheep & Cattle. "Coolowie" was approximately 100 miles north of Tamworth towards Narrabri on the Upper Horton River.
I attended the Church of England Girls School at Tamworth from the age of 9 & after leaving school I bred from time to time Border Collies & Smithfield Cattle Dogs for our own use on our property, & of course I had my Labradors.

I competed in Obedience Trials at Country Shows with my Labrador Retriever & German Shepherd bitches & my mothers Doberman Pinscher dog who I also exhibited at Breed Shows winning a number of classes.

I had a large team of Show Horses & competed successfully throughout NSW & Queensland, & exhibited at all Royal Shows except Darwin & Perth.
I won "Champion Galloway Hack" at Sydney Royal Easter Show in 1970 & "Reserve Champion in 1971", plus many major classes at all Royal Shows including "Supreme Champion Thoroughbred Exhibit" at Brisbane Royal in 1971.

I had a 50% partnership in a Thoroughbred Stud at Coonabarabran where we stood 4 Stallions, & prepared all our Yearlings for the Thoroughbred Yearling Sales in Brisbane.

After moving to Avalon in 1980 I worked part time for 7 years in 3 large Boarding Kennels at Duffy's Forest & Ingleside, &  managed the Ingleside Kennels for 6 months while the owners were overseas.

I was a member of "The Metropolitan Mid Week Obedience Club", "Manly & District Kennel & Obedience Club" & was an Instructor for a time at Manly.

I competed in Obedience Trials & Retrieving Trials in NSW for 15 years with my Labrador Retrievers, "Strangways Sea Shell CDX" [Jedda] & Ch Strngways King Arthur CD" [Banner] & exhibited "Ch Strangways King Arthur CD" at Breed Shows, where he could win a Class in Show one day & win a Retrieving Trial the following day.

I began breeding Labrador Retrievers selectively for myself in 1992, mainly for competition in Retrieving Trials, but endeavoured to maintain dogs that are true to type by using Working Lines over Show Lines & visa versa.

I breed Dual purpose Labradors that continued to look like Labradors, & can compete in the Show Ring, Obedience & Retrieving Trials, as well as work as Guide Dogs, Therapy Dogs etc.
I have bred Dual Champions & Obedience Champions.

My main love & my dogs was Retrieving Trials, where they really came into their own & showed what a Labrador is bred for, & my first home bred bitch was "Majoley Cracklin Rosie NRD" who even though not of show quality was a fantastic bitch in Retrieving Trials winning many Trials.
Rosie produced some unreal puppies who quite a number went on to compete in all fields that Labrador Retrievers can compete in plus great companions for many families.
More on "Rosie" in her personal page.

I competed successfully in Retrieving Trials for 20 years in NSW & Victoria, held the position of Trial Secretary of The Labrador Retriever Club of NSW for 15 years, was Treasurer of the Club for 12 months, & served on "The Royal NSW Canine Council Pty Ltd" Field & Retrieving Trial Committee for a number of years.
I was Secretary / Trial Secretary [1992 - 2004] of "The Royal NSW Canine Council Pty Ltd" State & National Championship Retrieving Trials & organized yearly State Championship Retrieving Trials, plus 3 National Championship Retrieving Trials.

In November 2005 I decided I had had enough of the frantic, polluted pace of city life, & moved from 1/4 acre at Avalon onto 5 acres at Braemar near Bowral in the Southern Highlands, where life for myself & my dogs is more peaceful, healthier, much more relaxed, & the dogs really enjoy the extra space & freedom.
My puppies receive  more individual attention from an early age, are more laid back & outgoing, having larger areas to explore when out & about, & are well socialised with numerous visitors.
For the older dogs daily life is never boring, just one big adventure.

I breed for Type, Temperament & Soundness, for the Show Ring, Obedience, Tracking, Retrieving & of course the family pet.
All stock are 'Hip' / 'Elbow X-Rayed' & 'Scored', have been DNA tested for 'PRA' by 'Optigen [USA]' & or 'Gentec [Victoria]', with Parents either Normal/Clear or Clear in their own right, hold Annual Eye Certificates, plus they have all been DNA Tested for 'EIC', & 'Colour Tested'.

I breed selectively for quality rather than quantity & my dogs & puppies live as part of the family.

I use mainly Bloodlines Imported from The UK, Sweden, Finland, South Africa, USA, Canada, & New Zealand.

Having used Chilled Semen in the past I am now dabbling in Frozen semen with very good results.
Progesterone Testing my bitches prior to matings has proved invaluable, & my success rate of  confirmed pregnancies is proof of this.

Due to ongoing health problems I can no longer show and breed my dogs. I am so proud and fortunate to pass the batton to one of Australia's best labrador breeder, Ray Attard of Lacote Kennels in Sydney. There is no other breeder in this country who I would entrust my Labradors to !!!

Thankyou to those who have read my story.
